Straight Time, Ulu Grosbard & Dustin Hoffman, 1978, 94 minutes

Based on the 1972 novel No Beast So Fierce by Edward Bunker, a veteran of the California prison system who created the manuscript while incarcerated and also co-wrote the screenplay.  Dustin Hoffman purchased the film rights to the story about an ex-convict’s earnest attempts to go straight.  Hoffman stars and had planned to direct; four days into production he handed over the director’s duties to Ulu Grosbard so that he could focus on his own performance.  Programmed by Harmony Korine, who will introduce the film.
