Straight Time, Ulu Grosbard & Dustin Hoffman, 1978, 94 minutes
Based on the 1972 novel No Beast So Fierce by Edward Bunker, a veteran of the California prison system who created the manuscript while incarcerated and also co-wrote the screenplay. Dustin Hoffman purchased the film rights to the story about an ex-convict’s earnest attempts to go straight. Hoffman stars and had planned to direct; four days into production he handed over the director’s duties to Ulu Grosbard so that he could focus on his own performance.
