About
CineMarfa was founded in 2011 by a group of artists, filmmakers, and film lovers to promote the culture of film and filmmaking in Marfa. Programmed by Co-Directors David Hollander and Jennifer Lane, CineMarfa was inspired by a desire to bring artist-made films usually screened in galleries and museums to viewers in Far West Texas. In addition to films made by visual artists, we focus on showing unusual and rare archival, experimental, documentary and narrative cinema. Our programs from year to year are related, with overlapping themes, motifs, and artists. Together they form an organic, dialectical meta-program that exists outside of commercial or institutional constraints.
Screening films in the intimate, historic Crowley Theater in the center of Marfa, we offer a unique context for artists to show their work, and for audiences to experience it. Since 2016, we’ve been able to offer a stipend to all visiting artists that is in line with W.A.G.E. guidelines, and we consistently seek to promote and support work by local filmmakers and artists of all ages, showing it alongside the work of established international filmmakers. All of our programming is free and is made possible by the generosity of our board, our sponsors and grantors, and the community of Marfa.
