A supernatural true story based on the writings of 16th century conquistador-turned-shaman Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Opuntia explores one of the strangest figures in the history of the Americas. Tracing his route through the “New World” and the physical markers of his journey, the film imagines his spiritual transformation along the way. Artist David Fenster uses psychics, mediums and poetic techniques to channel the struggles of Cabeza de Vaca as he wanders lost and naked from Florida all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
