THE EXILES  Sunday 5/20 @ 6:00 pm
1961, 35mm transferred to DVD, b/w, sound, 72 minutes, NR
written and directed by Kent MacKenzie

For the Native American men and women featured in this film, the nightlife in LA’s run-down Bunker Hill neighborhood is an escape from the monotony of life "back home." The guys spend their night barhopping while the women go to the movies to dream.  Gritty, realistic and far ahead of its time, the script was created exclusively from recorded interviews with the participants and with their ongoing input during the shooting of the film.  Director Kent Mackenzie spent long hours making friends and earning the confidence of these Indians who finally agreed to re-enact scenes from their lives for this picture. All of the actors, some of whom were recruited on the spur of the moment during the shooting, play themselves in the film.  With an introduction by Cedar Sherbert.  Courtesy of Milestone Films
