Gummo

1997, multiple formats transferred to DVD, color, sound, 95 minutes, rated R written and directed by Harmony Korine

Korine's directorial debut is an examination of grief, neglect, glue-huffing and cat-hunting in an Ohio town that has been decimated by a tornado. Gummo's mostly non-actor cast, stunningly photographed by the late Jean-Yves Escoffier in Korine’s hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, alternates between dreamlike improvisation and heartbreaking verité visions of rural American poverty, all set to a soundtrack of sludge metal and Roy Orbison.  With Harmony Korine.  Courtesy of Harmony Korine.
